Fasting 5K: DC

Ramadan is here which means Fasting 5K is BACK – bigger and better than ever! Since 2013, Fasting 5K has raised over $220,000 for various charities and now has 10 chapters across the country.

Our theme this year is Youth Civic Engagement. The mission is to support youth in developing leadership and civic engagement skills for their communities. For DC, we are partnering with Poligon Education Fund to support workshops specifically designed to empower youth to use Congressional advocacy to counter injustices, including anti-Muslim bullying many face in schools, and work for positive policy change.

WHAT IS FASTING 5K?

In 2013, a small group of individuals decided to become their own charity action committee and through social media, organized a multi- city 5K race during the month of Ramadan (a special month for Muslims where focus is placed on observing fasting, reflection, and charity), and raised several thousand dollars for local and international charities that aligned with their mission’s goal.

The individuals formed as the Fasting5k group and decided on creating a network of communities that run every Ramadan for a single cause – to give youth everything they need to develop regardless of their location and socioeconomic status and, ultimately, to be the catalysts for change in the future. WHEN AND WHERE WILL FASTING 5K BE THIS YEAR?

Fasting 5K is set for June 10th 2017 in Boston, Washington DC, New York City, Chicago, Toronto, Bay Area, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Detroit, Columbus, and Buffalo!

WHAT CHARITY IS FASTING 5K OF DC DONATING TOWARDS THIS YEAR?

This year the DC chapter of Fasting 5K will be donating towards Poligon Education Fund. Poligon is a non-partisan, millennial led organization dedicated to strengthening American Muslim engagement with Congress. Guided by values of peace, justice, and pluralism, they seek to unite Muslim and progressive voices to educate policy makers and make meaningful progress on pressing matters such as civil rights, Islamophobia, and the economy. We will be fundraising to support live trainings for youth to learn how to organize, amplify their concerns, and hold their representatives accountable at town halls and office visits in district and in D.C.
